Auld & Company Management Consultants, a boutique consulting firm in Calgary AB, was contracted to provide Project Management and Business Process Redesign services to lead The City of Calgary’s Single Construction Permit (SCP) Process Project. This initiative focused on streamlining the municipality’s permitting process to dramatically improve operational efficiencies and greatly enhance customer service. Collaborative efforts between Development and Building Approvals, The City of Calgary and the Calgary Region Home Builders Association (CRHBA) resulted in reduced number of inspections, improved inspection predictability and consistency. Calgary’s innovative approach to construction permitting was the first of its kind in Canada and has since paved the way for other municipalities interested in adopting similar systems. One reason that the implementation of The City of Calgary’s SCP Project was so successful is that a great effort was provided to understanding stakeholder needs and concerns. This ‘people focus’ enabled Auld & Company to manage a multi-level change effort by ensuring that staff and stakeholders were aware of the upcoming transition and trained on both the process and system changes. The SCP Project was the first stepping stone for The City of Calgary. Auld & Company has sinced helped the team mobilize its field staff and leverage technology to enable real-time inspection reporting to customers.
